Our first real stop (not counting the Coomera Service Centre - still technically on the Coast) was near Gympie. I had thought Matilda - the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games mascot - had ended up on the Gold Coast but we found her on the way to the Sunshine Coast. It was a wonderful surprise.
Next stop Maryborough. I had wanted to stay at the Ned Kelly Motel - because of the massive Ned Kelly at the front - but because the motel was due to be full of rugby teams, we decided to go elsewhere - and just go there to take a pic of Ned.
As well as being home to Ned, Maryborough is also renowned for being the birthplace of PL Travers - an author famous for her creation - Mary Poppins.
We tried the Happy Days Diner for dinner - it was within walking distance of the motel and was fantastically laid out and decorated - although we were a little underwhelmed with the lack of vegetables on the menu. We didn't order the stacked desert - a sundae with a block of cake on top, then smothered with whipped cream.
